The Asylum presents:

Clare Bollnow

Clare is a painter from Chicago, and she spent a few weeks with me at The Asylum this past January. She dove right into the depths of printmaking and started off strong by carving three blocks her first day here. She then made a suite of 22 monoprints and we moved foward with two editions, Prim and Proper. Check out what she made and have a look behind the scenes.

On her first day here in Virginia, we rearranged the shop so she would have room to paint, print and carve, we converted the living room into a dual work station so we could both be creative in the evenings, and Clare carved up THREE blocks! After experimenting with different substrates, she decided to work with MDF, the freedom of movement and blank slate textures are right up her alley.

While Clare was here, she really dove in and gave printmaking a fair trial. Not only was she willing to explore the medium she was developing a process and a system of working that left her thinking about printmaking sun up to sun down. As a printmaker, I was absolutely thrilled to watch Clare light up every reveal, and really give print her all. Take a look at the editions we made together and don’t forget to head to her socials and website and show her some love.
